Old Mine Cut and Old European Cut
Both cuts sit within the old cut family, come from different periods, and have different outlines. Both are available in lab grown diamond and moissanite at Carat Diamonds.
Old Mine Cut
The earlier of the two, from the Georgian and early Victorian eras. Cushion-like, squarish outline, very high crown, small table facet. No two share the same proportions; each was shaped individually from rough stone.

Old European Cut
The latter of the two was prominent from the 1890s through the 1930s. The round outline is the direct predecessor to the modern round brilliant but retains the high crown, smaller table, and open culet of antique hand cutting.

Why Old Cut Rings Look Different
Modern brilliant-cut stones are engineered for maximum white light return in the fastest, sharpest way. The effect is consistent; every stone produces nearly the same pattern.
Old cut lab grown diamonds and moissanite operate differently. Their broader facets scatter light slowly, in wider patterns. Under soft indoor lighting or natural daylight, both produce a quality of light that is difficult to photograph accurately. Most buyers say the ring looks noticeably better in person than online.
The difference between the two stone types:
- Lab grown diamond: produces white light return with natural fire chemically identical to a mined diamond, IGI or GIA certified
- Moissanite: produces higher colour dispersion (fire) than diamond, with more visible colour movement across the face of the stone under light
- Both are more interesting under soft indoor light than under camera flash
Best Settings for Old Cut Engagement Rings
Old cut stones have depth and volume that modern stones do not. The setting needs to work with that.
